Effective September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) extended the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. This change applies to those renewing an expiring or expired Green Card through a properly filed Form I-90.
Previously, Form I-90 receipt notices granted a 24-month extension of Green Card validity. USCIS has now updated the receipt notice language to provide a 36-month extension from the expiration date printed on the existing Green Card for new Form I-90 renewal requests. Starting September 10, USCIS began issuing updated receipt notices for individuals with pending Form I-90 applications.
These updated notices, when presented alongside an expired Green Card, serve as proof of continued lawful permanent resident status and employment authorization. This extension aims to assist applicants experiencing longer processing times by providing proof of status while awaiting their renewed Green Card.
If you no longer have your Green Card and need evidence of your status while waiting for a replacement, you can request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office through the USCIS Contact Center. After filing Form I-90, USCIS may issue you an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp to confirm your lawful permanent resident status.
